Create an In-Home Gift Shop

For those of you who love to shop, take the pressure off gift giving and start an in-home “gift shop”. Just by thinking ahead, when you’re out and about and come across unusual or exceptional bargain items, pick them up and keep them for Christmas, birthday, hostess or last-minute gifts. Unless you’re buying for someone extra special, most items are generic, so you can save a lot of time and dollars by thinking ahead and collecting suitable gift items on your routine shopping trips and storing them until needed. I’ve often had my Christmas shopping almost totally completed without ever specifically going Christmas shopping and fighting the crowds, and saved a bundle in money and stress in the process!

Reduce, Re-use, Recycle

Goodwill, Value Village and various other thrift stores carry a host of household and clothing items at next-to-nothing prices. Many pieces of clothing are brand new, and still carry the original price tag. If you’re really lucky, you can get designer names or vintage deals in mint condition. Don't forget to always donate your unwanted clothes and household items to one of these charitable recycle shops. Instead of hanging on to clothes you don't like, are dated or that will never fit you again, and after your spring and fall declutter, just call Value Village (the Diabetes Association) and they will pick up your donations.

Another great idea as a no-cost way of combining fun with “shopping” is to throw a swap party where your friends bring unwanted household goods and clothing, along with a pot luck dish, and you can have fun picking and choosing free “new” items. The leftovers can then be donated to charity (not the food though!). Last but not least, there are always great deals to be had at garage sales all summer long, but plan your route first and set your alarm to get there early for the best bargains. What better ways to get a new wardrobe and add some new touches to your home, while helping your budget and the environment in the process!

Flyers for Deals

Check out the weekly grocery flyers to see what amazing deals there are to be had, then make a list and plan a route to hit as many of the stores within your area as possible to stock up on sale items. Don’t go too far afield or you’ll waste gas, which defeats this exercise, and don't shop on an empty stomach. Try to stick mostly to the list unless you find other "too good to miss sale items" that you can definitely use and that will stretch your dollars even further.

Gourmet meals for pennies a day

If you’re not a vegetarian/vegan, most supermarkets sell meat ready to expire in a day or two at unbelievable discounts. Take some time to scout out a few grocery stores to see what deals you can pick up, either to cook that same day or freeze. And believe me when I tell you it’s entirely possible to cook 4 appetizing and nutritious meals from a small AAA grade round of beef all for under $10!

And for those of you who aren’t human carnivores, many supermarkets sell their cut up fruit and prepared salads/foods at discounts late in the afternoon. You can get some wonderful deals which will usually last a day or two in your refrigerator
